 History of Valentines Day

Febuary 14th is the day when lovers express their love for one another. Valentines day is named after two early Christains martyrs. The name Valentine is from the word Valens (worthy). It is thought that Saint Valentine was buried on Feb 14th at Via Falmia North of Rome.

The first writings of Saint Valentine appeared in the Nuemburg  Chronicle (1493); alongside the woodcut portrait of Valentine the text states that he was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius 11  known as Claudius Gothicus. He was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Helping Christians at this time was considered a crime. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't finish him, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate. Various dates are given for the martyrdom or martyrdoms: 269, 270, or 273

Valentines is great when you are in a loving relationship, but one of our customers who came into our shop at Bath Aqua Glass a few years back ordered a black heart with "sod off" engraved on it. The customer in question had had enough and thought it was a stylish way to finish her relationship. It really made us laugh and this year we were discussing it and thought it would be a good idea to add to our Valentine product range. We have had such a laugh thinking up slogans that could be engraved "not in your dreams",  "break this heart not mine", "over rover", "you were untrue this black heart is 4 U", "You are history ", "pack your old tie dyes away", "get on the bus Gus", "make a new plan Stan", "set me free", " My love is like a red red rose, but it has wilted".

Of course we have engraved many beautiful messages on our very lovely Cranberry hearts over the years which are all free blown by the Bath Aqua Glass blowers with love. A few of our favourites from the past include a Scottish man last year who engraved "till all the seas run dry lassie",  a few more inventive ones, "forever whatever the weather", "you shine my Valentine", " this planet with you", "me and you will always do" and "love is a pantomime never boring". Many people also give plain hearts.

We love Valentines as it shows love never dies, it just grows and recycles all the time.
